Nishimachi International School, located in a quiet suburb of central Tokyo, is a private, not for profit, coeducational K-9 school with a reputation for progressive, high quality 21st century education. Nishimachi is the school of choice for families seeking a challenging academic program in English but featuring a unique Japanese language and cultural program that complements the mainstream school curriculum. The entire curriculum is taught in English and all students study Japanese as a first or second language for one lesson daily. Nishimachi’s educational philosophy, rooted in a spirit of internationalism and humanism, provides a supportive family-like environment for its students and staff. We believe that education should promote the well-rounded development of each individual through the cultivation of their intellectual, creative, personal, social and physical abilities. Classroom and co-curricular activities should foster sensitivity to, and respect for, individual talents as well as differences. We also believe that every student must learn to function both as an individual and as part of a group. The school is committed to educating both expatriate and Japanese students to be international and independent thinkers. We believe that learning a second language provides the opportunity to grow beyond a single culture. Our ultimate goal is that every Nishimachi student learns to live harmoniously in, and contributes to, world society.
